Catacombs
Catacombs are located inside the city walls, next to the Bear Tower. The monu- ment is the underground church hollowed out in a solid rock. In the time by the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th Century, mighty duke Hrvoje Vukcic Hrvatinic gave an instruction to hollow out the Catacombs as a final resting place od ducal family Hrvatinic. In the late 19th and early 20th Century, the entrance to the Catacombs is enhanced by aboveground stone porch.
In the lobby walls there are unfinished reliefs of Hrvoje and Hrvoje`s coat of arms, carved female figure with a lily in a hand. From the lobby, entrance leads to the church which was built in the Romanesque style, and vaulted in Gothic style.
Along the side walls there are burial vaults on the floor, with arched openings. A double cross is carved at the bottom of the vault on the left side of the church, with the sun and crescent moon to its left and right- old symbols of the cult of death, afterlife and eternal sleep. From the centre of the main area, a kind of crypt is reached through a square hole and four steep steps.
The entire central space is taken up by an altar with a double cross-shaped perforation, sun and crescent moon.
